A picture is much more than just posing and pressing a button...
The recipe for the perfect picture boils down to three things: memories, light, and stories.
My main focus in every photo shoot is to capture, form and compose with these three elements. It's not an easy task, these concepts are always surrounding us just waiting to be harnessed and molded into creative art.
Now, Sedona and Montezuma are places where memories, stories, and light not only surround us but actually take root on their own. Where they sprout forth, self-sustained and linger generation after generation, telling their stories, spreading the light and sharing memories. When you are at certain magical spots you don't just feel connected to the earth, your own stories, and those you are with but you feel grounded to those who have preceded you and will come after you.
Memories
Memories are our past - it's what makes us who we are. We cannot accurately know where we are going if we don't stop and appreciate where we have come. I can't think of a better place that demonstrates this notion more than Montezuma's Castle! Our early predecessors didn't have all the modern day luxuries that we have today to build their homes or transport water. Instead of fighting nature they worked together, utilizing the resources found there, they were able to build this architectural wonder that has lasted for centuries! Our take away should be to not fight our circumstances but remember where we came from and utilize the resources we have in order to frame our future!
Stories
Stories are rooted in emotion. You hardly ever remember the exact words of a good book but you always remember how it made you feel. Likewise streams soothe peace into your heart and soul! It doesn't matter where you come from or where you might go once you leave but in the present, by the river, our stories are the same. The river is constantly changing and never sees the same drop twice but that doesn't mean we've missed our moment. We don't worry about the "missing water" we just soak up the serenity found in the flow.
Light
Light is impression, light is how we are affected by certain subjects. The Sun impresses upon us warmth, health, brightness. We have the ability to influence others just the same through out own light!
In Sedona, what impresses me the most are the red cliffs. The way they absorb and reflect the light onto all that is within their reach is inspiring. They contrast so drastically yet harmoniously with the vivid greens, whispering to us that we too can find the symphony amidst the polarity of our lives.
Much like photos, the best trips come from uniting these three elements to cultivate an experience! And often times the spontaneous ones turn out to be our favorites!
